The government has long encouraged the use of sustainable timber across the public sector. However, before last month, government departments were only required to "actively seek" the purchase of legal and sustainable timber products. There was no obligation on them to do so.rnFrom 1 April, the government's stance hardened. It is now a requirement that UK government property uses only timber and timber products derived from independently verified, legal and sustainable sources. This includes everything from furniture and construction timber all the way down to paper. This will have a big impact - nearly a quarter of all timber and wood products currently sold in the UK market are purchased by government organisations, including local authorities.
