EPA Highlights Alternate CRT Recycling Method To Reduce Stockpiling

EPA has approved a new method to recycle material from cathode ray tubes (CRTs) from old televisions and computer monitors that would exempt such material from hazardous waste regulations if it is used as a fluxing agent in the copper smelting process, possibly easing concerns over illegal stockpiling of CRTs. The agency endorsed the copper smelting option in an April 24 letter recently posted on its website and underscored the exemption during a May 31 webinar billed as a "listening session" for state waste regulators and others involved in CRT recycling who have raised concerns about limited recycling options.
