Catalytic converter manufacturers are urging EPA to quickly finalize its proposed Tier III rule to tighten the cap on sulfur in fuel or risk undermining the agency's fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) standards for cars, as more-efficient cars may ultimately increase their conventional pollution if they use gasoline produced at the existing sulfur cap. The argument was one of several over the Tier III proposal raised at an April 24 EPA public meeting in Philadelphia, PA, where emissions control manufacturers, refiners, automakers, environmentalists and others weighed in on the rulemaking. EPA's Tier III rule would reduce vehicle emissions primarily by cutting gasoline's sulfur content from 30 parts per million (ppm) to 10 ppm, in line with Californian, European and Japanese standards.
