Environmentalists Cite Ash Site Risks In Push For Disposal Rule Reform

Environmentalists in a new report are detailing their push for tougher regulation of coal ash disposal sites to limit water contamination, including stricter groundwater testing and closure standards, urging states to adopt policies more stringent than EPA's nationwide disposal rule - such as a recently enacted strict Virginia ash bill. Earthjustice and the Environmental Integrity Project on March 4 released the report, "Coal's Poisonous Legacy: Groundwater Contaminated by Coal Ash Across the U.S." In addition to reiterating the groups' claims based on industry monitoring data that nearly all ash disposal sites are linked to groundwater contamination, the report sets out six policy changes they hope to see at either the state or federal level.
