Surprising and arresting similarities between superstitious, childish Joan Durbeyfield and pious, evangelical Reverend Clare prevail despite the obvious discrepancies between their world views and religious beliefs and attitudes. This essay illulninates Hardy's artistic design in Tess of the D'Urbervilles by considering first the notable resemblances between mother and vicar and secondly, their relationships to their children.
