Positive leadership with global outlook

In my August column, I focused attention on the challenges and opportunities of climate change, noting that the "roles of engineers will be to develop energy efficient powerplants, to develop and improve renewable energy options in solar, wind and geothermal technology, and to ensure that energy efficient products and processes are introduced and undesirable byproducts made useful or disposed of safely". I made similar observations in my recent National Press Club address and, not surprisingly, one of the journalists posed a related question. In response, I proffered the view that there will be numerous opportunities for engineers to apply their innate ingenuity in new ways to solve new problems; indeed, not only have many of the problems yet to be identified, but their solutions may well lie beyond the bounds of engineering and technology as we understand them today.
