摘要

Engineering researchers from the University of Wollongong, University of Tasmania and the University of Technology Sydney are investigating ways to improve the teaching of introductory mechanics classes. The project, funded by a $150,000 grant from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council, aims to develop a way to identify students likely to struggle with their courses, and compile new and existing resources for lecturers to help them. It will start in October or November and run for 18 months. According to project leader Prof Tim McCarthy, the findings could help decrease the high drop-out and failure rates in engineering courses, and warn some students that engineering is not for them. Some of the students in McCarthy's third-year engineering design classes still struggle with first-year material. By improving introductory mechanics subjects he hopes all students will be able to understand the fundamental concepts in their first year.
