The Hattah Lakes Environmental Infrastructure Project is one of Australia's largest environmental works projects. It is also the first of its kind to build permanent large scale water management infrastructure solely for environmental purposes in the country. The 20 semipermanent lakes form part of the 48,000 ha Hattah-Kulkyne National Park in Victoria. They are connected to the Murray River via Chalka Creek but now naturally fill less often and for shorter periods due to river regulation and a changing climate. The project restored a more natural flooding pattern to Hattah Lakes through works including the installation of a smart pump station capable of discharging up to 1000 ML/d.
