Congratulation to Dr Paul Wilson on his excellent article "Call for PID controllers retirement" in the November general edition. I want to applaud the author for advocating a model based approach in building control systems. The better your model, the better you can predict the real process behaviour. Based on the model, it is possible to calculate corrective actions. The model based approach makes the control system proactive. First, you can detect abnormal conditions even before an adverse event happens by comparing the model outcome with the field data. Second, you can generate an alarm and stop process before the real damage is done, assuming no other corrective actions are possible.
