Dolphin design options

There are different ways to design a dolphin structure. One option is to drive piles vertically into the seabed. Such piles are simpler to install and allow 'rock sockets', or concrete anchors, to be drilled and filled into the rock below in order to strengthen the pile's connection to the seabed. But vertical structures are not as robust when it comes to dealing with lateral loads, such as those created by berthing ships.
