Applying Different Controller Structures for Position Control of Pneumatic Servo System

In this paper, the results are presented for position control of pneumatic servo drive using different conventional controller structures (PD, PVAP, PD-PI and nonlinear PI controller) as well as fuzzy logic based control approach (fuzzy PD controller). The control algorithms are derived using the linearized, control oriented mathematical model of the pneumatic servo system. The effectiveness of the proposed controller structures is experimentally verified on an industrial cylindrical rodless actuator controlled by a proportional valve. In order to compare the results for position control obtained from the experimental setup, the ITSE criterion is used. The analysis shows that pneumatic drives can be successfully used in less demanding industrial servo-control application with reasonable positioning accuracy.
