An effort to force an open-shop Utah fireproofing contractor to sign a union agreement has resulted in a volatile mix of firings, threats and picketing. Fifty-seven Hispanic workers walked off the job April 30 when contractor Utah Structural Coatings Inc. wouldn't recognize the carpenters' union as the workers' representative. The company fired workers who claim they were targeted because of union activity.
