Well into its second decade of deregulation, the U.S. natural gas system is in transition and under stress. With increased gas supplies seeking new markets and more powerplants turning to natural gas for fuel, there are new questions about whether pipeline capacity can keep up with the anticipated boom in demand. But resistance to pipeline construction is also growing, making it difficult for the system to bring new capacity to market fast enough.
