In September, more than 600 people showed up at a snazzy midtown Manhattan hotel banquet to fete Mysore L. Nagaraja, the new president of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Capital Construction Co. Another 150 couldn't get in. Many attendees came to see one of their own make good. The dinner, complete with Indian cuisine and sitar playing, was given for the India-born Nagaraja by peers in the local business community. But the event drew lots or others, particularly engineers and contractors eager to see and be seen by the soft-spoken guy who now will direct the city's biggest transit system expansion in decades.
