BRIDGES THE ROAD TO REPAIR, RENOVATION OR REPLACEMENT

There's good news and bad news when it comes to our nation's bridge infrastructure. First, there are over 90,000 structurally deficient bridges in the United States, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)—that's the bad news. The good news is that, according to the FHWA Office of Bridge Technology, that number is coming down. Matt Jean-neret, vice president of communications with the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), explains, "Over the last six years, more than 14,000 bridges that were on this list have been either rehabilitated or replaced. The investments in TEA-21 paid some dividends. But, there is obviously much bridge repair work that remains." Most recently, SAFETEA-LU authorized $21.6 billion for the bridge rehabilitation, a continued recognition by Congress of the need to repair and maintain the nation's bridges.
