Bolsa Chica, a tidal Southern California wetland that was dammed in the 19th Century and later turned into an oil field, was recently flooded with seawater for the first time in 107 years. The milestone caps a two-year, $86-million U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services construction project to reclaim part of a 948-acre area used for oil drilling. The total undertaking, 30 years in the making, is valued at $147 million and marks the state's largest restoration effort yet, says Jane Hendron, a Fish & Wildlife spokesperson.
