The construction industry and its materials suppliers have a long way to go in bringing the latest best thinking and products into the marketplace. Owners in many instances call the shots on what materials are used, but the industry and many owners can't seem to break out of the commodity way of thinking where low price is king-at least up front. The 50th anniversary of the U.S. Interstate system has people thinking about the expected life-span of public projects. The Interstate program was a massive venture started in the 1950s and designed with an eye toward tying the nation together economically, socially and militarily.
