The promise of integrated gasification/combined-cycle (IGCC) technology is that it will enable the capture and sequestration of most of the carbon-dioxide and other greenhouse gases generated by IGCC plants. But what's the reality? Coal gasification itself has been occurring for years at two utility-scale plants in Indiana and Florida, and a growing number of new, larger IGCC projects have been planned in recent years. While several have been canceled in recent months, mostly over concern about capital costs, some remain on the drawing board. At present, many engineers and utility executives remain unconvinced-or at least not confident-that IGCC technology with significant carbon capture and verifiable long-term sequestration is yet a viable approach.
