Impregilo Faces Challenge Of 3-Mile-Long Tunnel Under Lake Mead, Las Vegas

Impregilo and S.A. Healy Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Impregilo, in a joint venture known as Vegas Tunnel Constructors, were awarded the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 Tunnel Project by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) in March 2008. The contract value is US$ 447 million, and the contract type is design-build. Project completion is slated for 2014. The project consists of a 3-mile-long tunnel under Lake Mead, in Las Vegas, ending at a new intake structure that will be over 350 feet below the high-water line, to ensure the reliability of the southern Nevada water supply system. There are three main project areas, two of which will utilize first-of-its-kind technology.
