Motor City's Costs Track National Average

Construction costs in Detroit are up 3.0% above a year ago, compared to the national average annual increase of 2.5%, according to ENR's Construction Cost Indexes. The building cost index for the Motor City posted in November a 1.9% annual increase, compared to a 2.0% gain for the 20-city average index. Detroit's cost indexes received a boost from lumber prices, which are bouncing back from record lows. Lumber prices in the city's cost indexes are up 15% above November 2011 's level, following last year's 3.2% price increase.
