On December 22, 2011, the first of four tunnels (the A Tunnel) that compose the Queens Bored Tunnels-the second-largest contract in the New York City MTA's East Side Access project-broke through. The joint venture of Granite/ Traylor/Frontier-Kemper is operating the project. The tunnel-boring machine (TBM) launched in August and was the second to commence tunnel construction. The first TBM launched in May, has mined approximately 3,400 ft of the 4,317-ft Yard Lead Tunnel and is projected to break through at the end of January.
