Armed Services Standardize Facility Assessment

The U.S. Dept. of Defense has decided to bring all facility condition assessment and maintenance planning into a standard set of methods and software within five years for management of almost $830 billion of assets. The common process, which will apply to the facilities of all the armed forces, incorporates the Sustainment Management System, a suite of decision-support software and condition-assessment methodologies developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Engineer Research and Development Center-Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, Champaign, Ill. The system includes the software modules Builder, Roofer, Paver and Railer, which provide frameworks for consistently evaluating and rating the condition of such assets.
