Electric Gates to Empower New Panama Canal Locks

When it opened in August 1914, the Panama Canal changed the face of global commerce. Nearly 100 years later, the Panama Canal is once again revolutionizing world trade with the Panama Canal Expansion project that will add a new shipping lane and upgrades to the existing lanes to accommodate today's wider, deeper cargo ships. The expansion also includes the construction of the $3.12-billion Third Set of Locks with rapid open/ close operating gates, water-saving basins, advanced control technologies and a redundant power system that will double the tonnage capacity that can travel through the canal.
