The California High Speed Rail Authority is currently evaluating bids from five teams seeking the design-build contract for the project's first phase, from Madera to Fresno. This phase entails a segment between 26 and 3 3 miles long, depending on the final alignment, and will include 12 grade separations, two viaducts, one tunnel and a major crossing across the San Joaquin River. The first phase has been valued at between $1.5 billion and $2 billion.
