Three Mile Island has become the 20th nuclear plant to be pegged for closure since 2013. If owner Exelon does not receive state or federal subsidies, the company on May 30 said it will close the 837-MW plant in 2019. The company is terminating all capital investment projects required for the long-term operation of the plant and canceling its planned 2019 outage and turnaround. Unable to sell any power into capacity auctions for three years, the plant has been unprofitable for five years, Exelon says.
