Three publicly owned firms that have boosted positions in engineering and technology services achieved positive outcomes in their lat- est quarterly results, but one Wall Street analyst said he seeks more revenue-driven returns from industry-sector companies. AECOM, which sold most of its construction units in 2020, reported net income of $45.3 million in its fiscal 2021 second quarter on revenue of $3.3 billion, compared to a $77-million net loss on similar revenue in last year's Q2. Total backlog fell but was up 5% for design. SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. reported Q1 profit of $73 million compared with a $66-million loss in the same 2020 period, as it focuses on engineering and exits riskier fixed-price construction. CEO Ian Edwards said professional services and project management profit rose to $66 million from $21 million a year ago. An Ontario court ruled May 18 that with COVID-19, SNC-Lavalin Group and its partners building one Toronto light-rail line can tap a contract provision that extends time to finish the job without penalties and to seek payment for extra costs incurred.
