N.C. Orders Dupont Spinoff To Build New PFAS Controls on River

North Carolina regulators have ordered the chemical company Chemours, spun off by DuPont in 2015, to take additional steps to prevent pollution caused by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from entering the Cape Fear River-including construction of a 1.5-mile subsurface barrier wall and groundwater extraction system.Under an Aug. 13 pact with the state and environmentalists, the maker of chemicals such as Teflon and Freon must reduce toxins by 99% at four identified "seeps" that account for more than half of contaminated groundwater reaching the river-the source of drinking water for Wilmington, N.C, and two counties. PFAS were discovered in the river in 2017. The agreement, which has a 30-day comment period, is an addendum to a 2019 consent order that ended plant wastewater discharges. Under the decree, Chemours developed a plan to show the maximum plant PFAS reduction that can be achieved in two years.
