The food industry is under constant pressure to reduce operating expenses, shorten lead times, improve flexibility and increase throughput. The mantra these days is to "do more with less." In other words: get more throughput from a facility with fewer resources and reduced operating expenses. A simple and inexpensive way for food manufacturers to achieve more with less is by improving operations. CRB, a global engineering, architecture, construction and consulting firm, recently completed a study for a nutritional product company that uncovered more than 75 opportunities-effectively reducing cleaning and changeover operations by 50%, reducing waste generation on packaging lines by 20% and increasing throughputs without increasing staff. The overall savings realized were more than $3.8 million annually.
