The family business that's known today as Baker Concrete Constructionbegan clawing its way up the hill a half century ago. This is the story of how it went from farmers selling produce out of trucks to building complex concrete structures across the country.Having learned the trade from their grandfather, Elmer Baker, the Baker brothers, Dan, Jim and Ken, quit their jobs in 1968 to start their own concrete contracting company, Baker Cement Contractors. In those early years, they focused on residential work. After getting its first commercial job in 1972, with the construction of the First National Bank in Hamilton, Ohio, Baker transitioned from residential to the commercial market. By 1978, the company received its first contract of more than 1 million sq ft, a place-finish job for a Montgomery Ward Distribution Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and shortly after, a 3-million-sq-ft job with Ford Motor Co.
