I was approached recently by one of the church wardens to see if I could make some copies of a Victorian key for the side door of the church. She told me that the last time they had a copy made it had been done in the Prison workshops in nearby Northallerton; a service no longer available apparently. The key I was loaned for reference was in fact a skeleton key, with the fancy fretwork in the centre eliminated and shown here in photograph I. A skeleton key is effectively one stripped down to the bare essentials for operating the lock.
