Reference to Fig. 9 and the various 'insets' is recommended while going through the following notes. The crankshaft was made in three parts: the rear and centre sections of the shaft were cut from 6mm silver steel rod and as such there was no further work on them at this stage. The front end of the crankshaft - the primary crankshaft - was cut from 10mm silver steel rod as it was anticipated that a heavier than usual flywheel would be required. This was not to be the case because 'Quad' ran very well with a 4" (100mm actual) flywheel. The four crankdiscs were designed and cut from one piece of bright mild steel bar OD 1.57" (40mm), and 2" (50mm) long. The bar was first marked with a diagonal line using a centre-finder across the surface of both sides such that the lines were exactly opposite each other. The vertical sides of the bar were also marked to ensure the horizontal lines and the vertical lines were true - this was a precautionary move since the cranks were designed to give an exact off-centre bore from each side.
