First a note for those who intend to make the clock but have not started yet, perhaps because they want to see the whole series first. There is an alternative wheel count for anyone who does not have access to an index plate to cut a centre wheel with 105 teeth as specified in part I of this series. The centre wheel can be cut with 108 teeth using the same blank diameter of 82.5mm. However, to maintain the same rate for a seconds pendulum of 3600 beats per hour (bph) the 70 tooth pinion wheel must be changed to 72 teeth: Original bph = 2 × 60 × 105 × 160 / (8 × 70) = 3600 Alternative bph = 2 × 60 × 108 × 160 / (8 × 72) = 3600 Again, the same blank diameter of 51 mm can be used for the pinion wheel. However, those who use digital dividing systems should have no difficulty with the preferred counts.
