700MHz Auctions Will Focus On Coverage

The Dutch government has decided to make coverage a key condition of its future 700MHz auction, with more details availablernfrom 2017. This represents a change from previous auctions in the country. At the same time, European Union (EU) memberrnstates have all agreed to make the 700MHz available for mobile use by June 2020, with some exceptions granted an extra twornyears (to ensure no interference with current users). All regulators will need to propose their plans by June 2018. This highlightsrnthe public policy push towards ensuring ubiquitous connectivity through 5G, but demand will remain a core issue, as 4G is not yetrnthe dominant technology on the continent.
