Flexibility is crucial to the success of today's electronics manufacturing facilities. A truly flexible assembly system is easily configured for a broad range of assembly components, and meets the user's requirements for speed, quality and utilization. Equipment that can handle the entire range of components and applications is not truly flexible unless it addresses each of these factors effectively. Success must be measured in terms of components-per-hour (speed), defects-per-million placements (quality), line balance (utilization) and the system's component range coupled with the changeover time and configuration requirements.
