The recently published 2000 NEMI (National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative) roadmap indicates volume production in electronics manufacturing is increasingly driven by new products and applications. One of the underlying technologies enabling this growth is optoelectronics. Optoelectronic technologies help meet the growing bandwidth demands of Internet, wireless communications and multimedia applications. Fiber optic components already are well established in telecommunication core networks. This is not the case, however, as the demand for increased bandwidth is driven closer to the end user (i.e., residence or desktop). In this arena, copper-based solutions still dominate. The primary issue is cost. Optoelectronic components in local access and premise networks requirfe the right choice of technology at the right price.
