Chartered deal gives GlobalFoundries global reach

We recently wrote that if GlobalFoundries could build out its customer list with European chip makers at its Dresden, Germany, wafer fabs, it could become the elusive Euro-foundry that many have envisioned, and then some. We even observed that with a fab under construction in Albany, N.Y., GlobalFoundries' Abu Dhabian backers were reversing a trend to move manu facturing east. Now, the announcement of a $3.9 billion takeover of Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. by Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Investment Co., and the planned folding of that purchase into Global-Foundries, could have the foundry living up to its global name.
