摘要

A ROBOT THAT SCALES WALLS using a Tarzan-like "swinging rope" technique was demonstrated recently by the University of Utah. The rocking-climbing-oscillating robot (ROCR) is claimed to have set a record for climbing efficiency. According to ROCR's developer, Utah professor William Provancher, climbing robots to date have focused on grappling techniques and speed. "ROCR is the first to focus on climbing efficiently," Provancher said. The 1.2-pound, 18 x 12.2-inch ROCR climbs at just 6.2 inches per second but does so with record efficiency of 20 percent, he said. ROCR's two claws (left and right) cling to a carpeted wall while a microcontroller directs a small motor to swing the robot's pendulumlike tail. With each swing of the robot's tail to the left or right, the claw on the opposing side ratchets up a few inches, allowing the robot to shimmy up an eieht-foot wall in about rs seconds.
