In the early 1980s, while I was an electrical-design engineer for an automobile manufacturer, I had to diagnose and remedy a problem that surfaced during the development of a vehicle. The experimental-engineering garage called to tell me that one of the new development vehicles produced a strange, periodic snapping noise. Peering into the dark engine compartment, I saw that the noise was coming from a large arcing spark down low in the chamber.
