It's a commercialization conundrum: Clean energy technolo-gies that require extensive and expensive field-testing before deployment experience financing shortfalls at key points along the viability road. According to Michael Liebreich, the chief executive of Bloomberg New Energy Finance (which, with the Clean Energy Group, recently released "Crossing the Valley of Death: Solutions to the Next Generation Clean Energy Project Financing Gap"), there has been "a pre-Cambrian explosion of technologies offering possible routes to reducing the cost of low-carbon energy by an order of magnitude." But for these technologies to achieve their potential, he said, they must be tested at a commercial scale.
