The nature of enzymes which can be formed in a given organism is determined by the genes present in its chromosomes. If gene mutations produce their effects in this way, the result on an enzyme will depend in part when in the protein the situation takes place. If the change only in part where in the protein remote from the active centre, it will not affect the catalytic activity and in the normal course of events would not be noticed. On the other hand, the change occurs in the active centre itself, it will probably result in a complete absence of enzymatic activity.
