Walkin' Around and Doin'Stuff

When I owned and ran my own businesses, there were a couple of simplistic tools that I used to effectively keep my finger on the pulse of the business. I utilized these tools in addition to the numerous shop and management reports produced from our ERP software. When I was in college, I took a management course that taught me an important lesson: Casual, regular, and random observations of your operations can tell you a lot about what's going on. Statistically speaking, if your pattern of observations is random and you regularly observe the same behaviors or activities, it is likely that what you observe is representative of what's going on all the time.
