Ariel sharon could hardly have wished for more propitious timing. As he sat with George Bush in the Oval Office on June loth, recounting his battle against Islamist suicide bombers, the American people were being told of the Muslim convert who allegedly plotted to explode a "dirty bomb" on Washington. The news galvanised the hold that Israel's grizzled and unyielding leader seems to have over the Bush administration and much of policy-making opinion in the United States.
