At long last, the labor market appears to be healing. Initial claims for unemployment insurance have averaged 380,000 over the past six weeks, about 25,000 above the long-term average but considerably better than the readings over the summer and early fall. Employment has picked up and the unemployment rate has dropped 0.6 % points over the last four months to 8.5%.
