Phosphate processing took place in the port area,leaving a huge quantity of phosphogypsum waste material discharged on the coastline close to Sfax's historic Medina. Although the authorities stopped this practice in the early 1990s,acids and trace metals threatened both the city's environment and its coastal fishery.
