A USD1.38 billion dredging project in New Jersey is falling short of environmental expectations, John Gallagher reports. US regulators have signed ofF a plan to remove contaminated sediment from the polluted Passaic River in what would be the largest-ever US environmental dredging scheme. A final plan released by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said the scheme involved dredging 2.68 million m~3 of toxic sediment from the lower 12.9 km of the Passaic, which flows into Newark Bay next to the New York-New Jersey port complex. After dredging, the lower river will be capped bank to bank, according to the EPA. This will prevent any leftover contaminated sediment from entering the food chain. The river bottom will then be capped.
