Dredging activity is not going to stop in Panama Canal waters once the first new-Panamax transits the waterway via the new third lane in June. "We still have a lot to do," acknowledged Panama Canal Authority (ACP) dredging division head Rolando Gordon during an interview with IHS DPC in March. The dredging of the Panama Canal's Pacific entrance, a project that is not a part of the canal expansion programme, is expected to be completed in June 2017. The contract, awarded to Dredging International in November 2015, involves widening the channel to 300m, from 192 m currently, and removing more than 5 million m~3 of mostly soft material.
