For the 55th International Art Exhibition in Venice, in a break with the tradition of inviting national artists, France and Germany have decided to trade pavilions and exhibit artists from around the world. France has chosen Albania's Anri Sala and Germany the dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, Indian photographer Dayanita Singh, South African artist Santu Mofokeng and French-German film director Romuald Karmakar. What's more, Russia has handed the artistic direction of its pavilion to a foreigner for the first time, selecting Udo Kittelmann as the curator.
