摘要

Wheat, aluminium and iron are the materials of Gian Maria Tosatti's large, scenic installation at Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples. Having won the competition "Un'Opera per il Castello", the artist's proposal My dreams, they'll never surrender will entail the permanent planting of a 1 km~2 field of wheat in the cistern, the castle's deepest, darkest bowels. The fortress, now a museum, was built for defence and also used as a prison. "I dedicate this to those who have spent part of their life in jail because of their ideas, and were able to change the course of history from a prison cell," says Tosatti. Only viewable from above, through a small window, the installation refers to the heritage that has been handed down to us by illuminated thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Luisa Sanfelice and Nelson Mandela. Of course the field will need tending to, and Tosatti's concept delegates that part to the citizens.
