Pelagic Seabirds Risk Their Lives to Fly Over Mountains

Pelagic seabirds have evolved to fly efficiently over the oceans. How is it then that juvenile streaked shearwaters (Calonectris leucomelas) fly over the mountain ranges of Japan? We have used GPS transmitters to trace their routes. Mapping their sea and mountain routes reveals dramatic year- to- year differences, suggest- ing that topographic features and seasonal wind conditions may influence their routes and survival. What we know now, and the unanswered questions raised, could determine the future conservation of this species.
