This book is effectively about diplomacy and political manoeuvrings, given Denmark's neutral status during the Napoleonic Wars. The failure of Nelson and Hyde Parker to destroy the Danish fleet in 1801 raised the spectre in British minds of it falling into Napoleon's hands, prompting the 1807 bombardment, this time accompanied by 'boots on the ground', including those of the future Duke of Wellington. The two actions were linked in much the same way as the two Gulf Wars - a parallel that has not escaped the author.
